In Word Press version 3.0, there is a new feature that allows you to create a custom navigation and place it in one of the widget areas of your template.

Create a custom menu

Click on Appearance > Menus

Type the name of your menu in the box provided, then click the CREATE MENU button

Adding items to your new custom menu

You now have a menu, but it’s empty. There are three different types of items you can add to the menu; Custom Links, Pages and Categories. Each are explained below.

CUSTOM LINKS - these are links to pages that are not generated by your Word Press install. In the URL box, type the URL (include the http://), type the name of your link in the Label box and click ADD TO MENU asdf

PAGES – if you have created pages on your Word Press install, you can place a tick next to the pages you want added to the menu and click the ADD TO MENU button. You cannot change the name of the page, it takes the page name from within Word Press.

CATEGORIES – if you have categories created on your Word Press install, you can place a tick next to the categories you want added to the menu and click the ADD TO MENU button. You cannot change the name of the category, it takes the page name from within Word Press.

Change the order of your menu items

Once you have a couple of links in your menu, you can easily change the order they appear in by simply dragging & dropping them. Menu items that all line up together on the left are the main items. If you want sub-menus (drop down menus etc. depending on the style of your template), simply drag & drop the menu item on top of the main item, but over to the right a little. You’ll then see the menu item indented. See below, MINKPINK, Living Doll, Junk and Wakee Jeans are the top level menu items. Ladakh is a sub-menu of MINKPINK.

Deleting a menu item

Click on the down arrow on the RHS of the title bar for your menu item.

Click the REMOVE link

Deleting an entire menu

Simply click the DELETE MENU link next to your menu.

To add a widget

Go to Appearance > Widgets

On the left hand side, you’ll have a section in a rounded box called AVAILABLE WIDGETS. On the right hand side, you’ll have the areas where you can drag the widgets to. Each Word Press theme is different.

Using the down arrow (seen below on the right hand side of each heading area), open up the area you wish to drag your widget in to. The arrows will toggle the windows open and closed as required.

Now you simply choose your widget from the left hand side, click & drag it over to the right hand side, and let go.

Each widget has a different use. To customise your widget, please read the tutorial specific to that widget. If there is no tutorial written for your widget, please let us know so we can write it for you.

To remove a widget

Word Press allows you to upload files for people to download. Typically, you’ll have the link attached to words (ie: CLICK HERE to download this file).

Remember, your hosting space has a limited capacity & bandwidth, so don’t upload massive files that will be downloaded excessively. Also remember that if you upload a Microsoft Word file, only those who own Microsoft Word can open and read it at the other end. PDF files are a good alternative.

Place the cursor where you want your file upload to go, then click on the ADD MEDIA icon.

From the Add Media popup box that now appears, make sure you’re on the FROM COMPUTER tab, and click on the SELECT FILES button.

Find the file you want to upload on your computer, then click OPEN. Note the maximum file size you can upload is 2mb

There are now a couple of settings for the uploaded file you are able to set by hand before inserting it in to your post.

Title – this will be the text that your file is linked from. ie: CLICK HERE.

Caption (optional) – a caption that can display on some themes but not for all.

Description (optional) – a caption that can display on some themes but not for all.

Link URL - leave this alone. It’s already set to the File URL for the file you just uploaded.

Click INSERT INTO POST

Word Press allows you to insert images in to your posts. It does have the function to make your images smaller, but it’s always a good idea to start by using a small image to begin with. Don’t just grab a 3mb file off a camera, make it smaller in image editing software first.

Also remember, you can’t just steal images off other websites, it’s copyright infringement. Also, DO NOT HOTLINK to images from other people’s websites. It is considered poor form to grab the file location of an image from another site and just embed it in to your site. It steals the bandwidth off the other site owner and you have zero control over the image because it’s not hosted on your server.

Click on the ADD AN IMAGE icon.

From the Add an image popup box that now appears, make sure you’re on the FROM COMPUTER tab, and click on the SELECT FILES button.

Find the image you want to insert on your computer, then click OPEN

There are now several settings for the image you are able to set by hand before inserting it in to your post.

Title – Give the photo a name. On some themes this will display on the site under the photo, but not for all.

Alternative Text (optional) – the text that displays when someone hovers over the image

Caption (optional) – a caption that can display on some themes but not for all.

Description (optional) – a caption that can display on some themes but not for all.

Link URL - When people click on the photo, you can have it so the image is linked to something.
Choose NONE if you don’t want the image to link to anything.
Choose FILE URL (the default) if you want the full-size version of the image to be linked (useful if choosing the Thumbnail size photo – read below)
Choose POST URL if you want the image to link to the article
Or you can put something completely different in there.

Alignment – this works the same way as it does in Microsoft Word.

Size – Thumbnail inserts a small version of the image in to your post. Medium, Large and Full size put larger versions in. The pixel size is listed under each one. Typically, the area you have for your post is probably somewhere between 500-800 pixels.

Click INSERT INTO POST

Once you understand the concept of what Widgets are in Word Press, you’ll find out how versatile they are and how flexible it makes the software. The idea behind the widgets is that there are many features in Word Press, but not everyone wants to use them all.

Some of these widgets include (but are not limited to):-

the search box

the navigation

links

comments left on posts

tag clouds

twitter streams

archives

….and many other custom designed widget that live within specific Word Press themes.

Each Word Press template has certain areas where you can ‘drag and drop’ widgets in. The location varies between themes. The Widgets system is set up in such a way as to allow the user to add & remove Widgets without the need to use web design skills.

Read the specific tutorials on each Widget.

To find the widgets in Word Press, head to Appearance > Widgets

Here’s a brief overview of some you might need to use:-

IMAGE – if you’re using one of the features (ie: the business slider) that shows an advertising image for your page/article, you upload it here.

LAYOUT – useful if you want to override the standard page format – mostly used for creating a full-width page. By clicking on any of the layout diagrams, your new Page/Post will shed the columns holding your widgets and/or navigation.

URL – if you’re using the business slider, you can get the image to link to a page.

EMBED – used for embedding video code. Ask us for more specific details

SEO – Remove Nofollow - by default, search engines don’t follow the links on these pages, place a tick in the box to allow them to.

SEO – Custom Description - this helps with your search engine rankings and usually is what’s displayed on the Google search results page.

SEO – Custom Keywords - this helps your search engine rankings too, but to be honest, most search engines ignore keywords these days.

If you are using one of the WooThemes designs for your Word Press site, it may have an area called Custom Navigation. If the theme you chose has the Custom Navigation feature, it allows you to do is to hand modify the main navigation systems for your site (post & pages) or to create brand new menus for you to insert in other areas of the website (using the Widgets feature of Word Press).

To find the Custom Navigation

Click on the name of your theme (next to the little Woo icon) and a menu similar to the following one will show. Click on the CUSTOM NAVIGATION link.

Select an existing menu to work with

There should be 2 menus automatically set up for you. The menu that displays your PAGES will be called Woo Menu 1. The menu that displays your POSTS will be called Woo Menu 2. Any menus that you have created yourself (see below) will have the name you allocated.

In the MENU SELECTOR, choose the menu you want to work with from the drop down box & click SWITCH

Create a new menu

New menus can be created and then added to your website using the widgets feature. From the MENU SELECTOR box, type the name of your new menu in the empty box (bottom row) and click the ADD MENU button.

Add an existing page to the menu

The easiest way to do this is to click the VIEW ALL link, then click to add the page to the menu.

Add an existing category to the menu

The easiest way to do this is to click the VIEW ALL link, then click to add the category to the menu.

Add your home page to the menu

This is the one thing we think should be easy, but it’s actually a little tricky. Because the logo is usually the HOME link, this isn’t a standard feature of the Custom Navigation system, but it’s easy enough to work around. Just follow the tutorial below, Add a link to an external website to your menu, and in the URL field, add your full website address, including the http://www. section of it.

Add a link to an external website to your menu

In the URL field, put the full address of the page/site you want to link to. Include the http:// or it won’t work.
In the Menu Text field, type the name as you want it to appear in the menu. ie: Links
The Description field is optional, and will only display if the menu system is designed to show the description. Most don’t, but some do.

If you want a link to an external website to open up in a new window, you first need to add the item as listed above and then follow the Edit an existing menu item below to change the way the link opens.

Delete an item from your menu

This one’s simple. Click the next to the menu item you want to delete.

Edit an existing menu item

Click the icon. You will now have the option to change the Menu Title, the URL, the Link Title, the Description, and also whether the link opens in a new window when the user clicks on it.

Change the order an item appears in the menu (including having drop-down sub menus)

This one’s really easy. Once you’re viewing your menu, simply drag & drop each menu item to change the order they appear in. If you want one item to be in a drop-down sub-menu, simply drag it and drop it on top of the main item and you will see the indent in the list.

Click the SAVE ALL CHANGES button when you’re done with any menu changes.

Underneath, a line will appear that starts with the word Permalink. This will be the address of the page. You can alter the last portion of this page URL by clicking the Edit button (which is optional)

In the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor, type your text in. More details on how to use the WYSIWYG editor effectively will be covered in another tutorial

Attributes - Parent
Main Page (no parent) means your page will be in the top level of the navigation. Drop this down to make your new page a ‘sub-page’ of a page that already exists. This new page won’t appear in the main navigation, but it will appear in a sub-menu/drop down menu on the site. This is useful for sites with a large number of pages.

Attributes - Template
Different themes have different page templates and they are laid out differently. Leave this set as the Default Template for now, unless you have read a more in-depth tutorial and chosen something more specific.

Attributes – Order
By placing a number in here, you can easily decide what order your pages will appear in the navigation.

Publish – click the Publish button when you want your page to go live on your website.

Word Press is a simple yet effective content management system. For those looking for a browser based CMS, that allows you to add & update your own pages & run a news section, this is the perfect solution.

Here’s a brief run-down on what it’s capable of and what each section in the back-end (the Dashboard) is for.

Posts vs Page

There are two ways to enter information in to Word Press, and they are POSTS and PAGES.

POSTS should be thought of like news articles. They are usually displayed with the latest story listed at the top, and many people use Word Press with the news posts displaying as the main content on the front page (although you certainly don’t have to). Posts are automatically archived by categories and can also be archived by date. By playing with the widgets (see below), you can decide how these archives are displayed on your website. If you want to, you can allow people to comment on your posts. If you do, you can moderate all comments and delete any you don’t want to appear on your website.

PAGES are designed for content that does not have an expiry date. Think of them quite literally as pages on a standard brochure style website. Originally Word Press was designed as blogging software, ie: news articles, but these days, it’s being used more for standard pages as well.

Widgets

Widgets are little tools and options that can be dragged in or taken out of Word Press to suit your own personal needs. Depending on how your template (or theme) is set up, there will be various places on your site where you can ‘drag & drop’ these widgets and move them around from within the admin panel. Some examples of widgets are:-

search boxes

a list of your pages

post archives (listed by category and/or by date)

favourite links (or blogroll)

a calendar

recent comments

RSS feed

Ads

Twitter Feed

a tag cloud

plain text or graphics

Themes

This of themes as the artwork of your website. We usually start off with a professionally designed theme from www.woothemes.com and insert your logo in to your preferred theme/layout. Custom modification can be done on any theme. There are themes designed for many different uses, and depending on what kind of content you will be putting on your site, we will recommend specific themes to suit your needs.
