Word Press is a simple yet effective content management system. For those looking for a browser based CMS, that allows you to add & update your own pages & run a news section, this is the perfect solution.
Here’s a brief run-down on what it’s capable of and what each section in the back-end (the Dashboard) is for.
Posts vs Page
There are two ways to enter information in to Word Press, and they are POSTS and PAGES.
POSTS should be thought of like news articles. They are usually displayed with the latest story listed at the top, and many people use Word Press with the news posts displaying as the main content on the front page (although you certainly don’t have to). Posts are automatically archived by categories and can also be archived by date. By playing with the widgets (see below), you can decide how these archives are displayed on your website. If you want to, you can allow people to comment on your posts. If you do, you can moderate all comments and delete any you don’t want to appear on your website.
PAGES are designed for content that does not have an expiry date. Think of them quite literally as pages on a standard brochure style website. Originally Word Press was designed as blogging software, ie: news articles, but these days, it’s being used more for standard pages as well.
Widgets
Widgets are little tools and options that can be dragged in or taken out of Word Press to suit your own personal needs. Depending on how your template (or theme) is set up, there will be various places on your site where you can ‘drag & drop’ these widgets and move them around from within the admin panel. Some examples of widgets are:-
- search boxes
- a list of your pages
- post archives (listed by category and/or by date)
- favourite links (or blogroll)
- a calendar
- recent comments
- RSS feed
- Ads
- Twitter Feed
- a tag cloud
- plain text or graphics
Themes
This of themes as the artwork of your website. We usually start off with a professionally designed theme from www.woothemes.com and insert your logo in to your preferred theme/layout. Custom modification can be done on any theme. There are themes designed for many different uses, and depending on what kind of content you will be putting on your site, we will recommend specific themes to suit your needs.
