contribute tutorials - hyperlinks

A hyperlink is where you link to another page (either within your website, or to an external website) or you may even link to a document or file that's attached to your website. This tutorial deals with the first, linking to other web pages.

  1. Before you can edit a web page, you need to log on, then surf to the page you want to change (just like you do when you're using a normal browser like Internet Explorer)
  2. Once you're on the page you want to change, click the Edit Page icon.
  3. You are now in edit mode. You will notice that you do not have access to the entire page, just what's inside the blue boxes. You only have access to the editable regions of the website, and as such, cannot destroy the integrity of the overall structure of the website.
  4. Find the text (or the image) that you wish to link and highlight them.
  5. Up in the toolbar click the LINK button. Choose Browse to web page from the drop down menu.
To link to a page that's not on your website - click the Browse button, find the page you want to link to, click OK. If the page you're linking to belongs to someone elses website, we want this link to open up in a new window. Click the Advanced button. Make the Target Frame option say New Window, then click OK.
To link to a page that is on your website - click the Browser button, find the page you want to link to, click OK, then click OK again. Because this page is on your website, we don't need the advanced options as mentioned above.
    -or-
if you know the page name, click the Choose button and you'll get a list of the file names already on the server. Make your selection, click OK then click OK again.

As well as hyperlinking to pages, you can hyperlink to someones email address. Please bear in mind that when you do this, you are opening this email address up to being spammed. When we put email addresses in websites, we scramble them and hide them from the software programs that run through the code to grab addresses. You will not be able to do this. Proceed knowing full well you will add to your spam by doing this. If you have adequate server-side spam filtering, this will not really cause you any issues. If we host your website, ask us about the spam filtering options available.

  1. Type the words that you wish to be linked to the email address. It can be the actual email address, "jo@bloggs.com" or it can be words "Email Jo Bloggs".
  2. Click the LINK button in the toolbar then click Email Address.
  3. Type the email address in the field provided, click OK.
