adobe photoshop elements tutorials - resize photo

When you upload photos to the web, it is very important that they are resized and saved for the web so they are not too large on the screen and so they don't take too long to load on the page.

  1. Open the photo you wish to make smaller File > Open.
  2. To resize the photo, from the menu choose, Image > Resize > Image Size
  3. Make sure there is a tick in the box at the very bottom Resample Image and also Constrain Proportions
  4. In the top have of the pop up, there's a heading Pixel Dimensions. In this area, choose either the height or the width you want to specify. Whichever you choose, the other one will change automatically and your image proportions will remain intact.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Now you need to save the photo for the web (saving for web and saving for print are completely different). From the menu choose File > Save For Web
  7. Over on the right in the Preset box, there are two drop down boxes just underneath the word Preset. If the top one doesn't already say JPEG, you need to change it so it does. Quality should be set somewhere around 65 - 75.
  8. Click OK
  9. Name your file in the File Name box, choose where you want to save the image, then click SAVE. Note: when naming your file, make it a meaningful name and NEVER put spaces in the name. It's also a good idea to use all lower case, but not essential.
