word press tutorials - working with categories in the 'post' section of Word Press

Word Press has the ability to sort diary entries in to different categories, which can be useful for going through archives of large diaries.

version 2.7 & above

CREATE A NEW CATEGORY IN THE MIDDLE OF A POST

  1. While in post or edit mode, there are boxes/items on the right hand side, one of them is Categories.
  2. To create a new category while you're in the middle of a post, simply click the+ Add New Category button and type in the new category name and click Add. Categories do have the ability of a sub-category heirachy, so you can make a new category a sub-category of another by dropping down the Parent Category menu and choosing.

CREATE A NEW CATEGORY BEFORE YOU WRITE A POST

  1. Click on Posts. The sub-menu will now appear.
  2. Click on Categories
  3. To create a new category, type the Category Name, the Category Slug (lowercase no spaces), Choose the Category Parent, type in a Description and click Add Category. Good explanations are on this page.
  4. To create a new category while you're in the middle of a post, simply click the+ Add New Category button and type in the new category name and click Add. Categories do have the ability of a sub-category heirachy, so you can make a new category a sub-category of another by dropping down the Parent Category menu and choosing.

EDIT OR DELETE A CATEGORY

  1. Click on Posts. The sub-menu will now appear.
  2. Click on Categories
  3. On the right hand side, hover over the category you want to work with, choose Edit | Quick Edit | Delete and follow the prompts. By now, you'll be savvy enough to read the screen, type in the details and and click the Update Category button.

 

version 2.6 & below

  1. While in post or edit mode, there's a large number of boxes/items on the right hand side, one of them is Categories. If there's a + next to it, click on it to expand the box. If there's a - next to it, it's already expanded.
  2. To create a new category while you're in the middle of a post, simply type your category name in the box provided and click the ADD button.
  3. To choose a category for you post that has already been created, simply put a tick in the box next to your category of choice. You may choose more than one.
