word press tutorials - adding a hyperlink

although written for version 2.6 & lower, this is almost identical in version 2.7+

While you are in the write or edit modes, there are many things you can do besides typing in plain text. A hyperlink is underlined text, that when clicked on, sends you to another page or website. Use this tutorial to create links to other pages in your own website or links to other people's websites.

  1. In the POST box, there are tools, like you find in Microsoft Word. One of them looks like a 3 linked chain. When you hover over it, it says Insert/edit link. Highlight the text you want to hyperlink then click on this icon.
  2. A pop up window will now appear. In the Link URL box, put the full website address of page you wish to link to, including the http://. It is best to browse to this page in a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox) then copy and paste this from the address bar to avoid typos.
  3. Target has a drop down box with 2 options. Choose Open link in the same window if the link is going to a page located on your own website that contains your website's navigation (so people can continue to move around your website)
    -or-
choose Open link in a new window if you are linking to a page on your own website without navigation or if you're linking to someone elses website.
  4. Title is optional - people will see this appear when they mouse-over your hyperlink but have not clicked on it yet.
  5. Click the INSERT button when you're done.
