word press tutorials - uploading images

Unless your image is already 'web friendly', working with images requires you to have some working knowledge of image editing software such a Photoshop, or whatever software came with your digital camera / scanner. This tutorial will not cover how to edit, resize or optimise your images. If you don't understand what these words mean, you shouldn't be adding images to your website without some training. If you embed images that are too large in file size, you will fill up your hosting space quickly and the pages will take forever to load.

version 2.7+

  1. Whether you're creating a new page or post, or editing an existing one, the process for adding an image is the same. Click on the Add Image icon (below)
  2. TO ADD FILES THAT ARE ON YOUR COMPUTER
    * From the 'Add an Image' box that's now on your screen, you will already be on the 'From Computer' tab. Click on the Select Files button.
    * Find the image on your computer and click the Open button.
TO ADD FILES THAT ARE ALREADY ON THE WEB

TO ADD FILES FROM A MEDIA LIBRARY
    coming soon
  3. You should now see the image and the following information (see screenshot)
  4. Title - give the photo a name. You can leave what the system has auto generated if you like, this is usually not seen.
  5. Caption - this is seen when people hover over the image with the mouse and is used for image searching in Google.
  6. Description - this may not be seen, but for some photo gallery templates, it may be.
  7. Link URL - this is used if you want a web page to open up when people click on the photo. None will have no link. File URL will open up the image. Post URL will open up the news post. If you want another page to open up, put the full URL in this space (including the http://)
  8. Alignment - this has to do with how the image will sit in relation to the text around it.
None - puts the image in it's own and text just follows after it
Left - Image top left corner, text wraps around
Center - image center, text wraps around (rarely used)
Right - image top right corner, text wraps around
  9. Size - choose from either Thumbnail, Medium, Large or Full Size - depending on the size of your original image, the system will automatically tell you the dimensions in pixels that your image will display in.
  10. Click Insert Into Post

version 2.6 & below

  1. While in post or edit mode, you may add images to your posts. Underneath the Title & Post boxes, there's a large box with Upload & Browse All as menu options. Click on Upload if it's not already displaying.
  2. First you much choose the image you wish to upload. It needs to be on your computer and already resized and optimised for the internet. If it's not, you're quite possibly going to create an unpleasant experience for your visitor and create a bad image for your business. Click the Browse button, search for the file on your computer then click the OPEN button
  3. Title & Description - put something meaningful in here. If you're going to choose to just link to the photo (see below) and not actually display it on the page, the text used to link to the photo will be the Title.
  4. Click the UPLOAD button.
  5. You should now be on the Browse All tab. All we have done so far is to upload the image to the web server. It is not in your diary entry yet.
  6. Click on the image you wish to put in your diary entry and a sub-menu will pop up. Each time to click on one of the items listed in the menu, it changes. We'll go through each of the 5 and their options
Position 1 - Using Thumbnail, the software will make a tiny version of your image and link to the larger version. This way, it doesn't take up too much space on the screen.
-or- Using Original will insert the image at it's original size.
Position 2 - Not linked, the image will not link to anything - Linked to image, the small version created will link to the big version of the image all on it's own - LInked to page, means that when people click on the small version of the image, the large version will display on the website with all the rest of page still there (navigation, logo etc).
Position 3 - Send to Editor, the image will now be inserted in to your diary entry.
Position 4 - will delete the file from the server
Position 5 - will close the menu options.
  7. We suggest you try a few different settings, choose Save and Continue Editing, then use the preview pane at the bottom of the screen to see if you like the results you got. Your first few diary entries with images may be trial and error. If this is too difficult, please contact us for a training session on site.
